Chairman Okada attends PORTS '22


PORTS '22, a triennial conference of the Coasts, Oceans, Ports and Rivers Institute (COPRI) of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), was held in Honolulu on September 18-21, 2022. From Japan, Mr. Mitsuhiko Okada, Chairman of PIANC-Japan, and Dr. Ichio Motono, Executive Director of the Overseas Coastal Area Development Institute (OCDI), attended the conference.

Chairman Okada participated in a panel discussion, "PIANC-Maritime Perspective across the Pacific", held as a special session of the conference on September 19. He made a presentation on the background, goals and progress of Japan's carbon neutral port (CNP) policy. He concluded his presentation by calling for the collaboration of engineers around the world to achieve carbon neutrality in port areas. The panelists included Mr. Francisco Esteban Lefler, President of PIANC, and representatives of PIANC's Australia, Canada, South Korea, and US national sections.

On September 20, members of PIANC WG 208 made a presentation in another special session, outlining the contents of its newly published report on planning of automated container terminals. In a technical session on September 21, members of PIANC WG 211 gave an update on their works on design of fender systems.
